Modern Family reinvents the family comedy  Nov 9, 2009
It's as sharp as "Seinfeld," as layered as "Arrested Development," with characters every bit as lovable as those in "Raymond," but there's also a flavor we haven't tasted on TV for a while: sweetness. There have been a lot of extremely funny shows on the air,'' says co-creator Steven Levitan ("Just Shoot Me"). (MSNBC -- News)

"). This happens because someone in a suit somewhere actually believes that frenetic cheer or rampant overexplaining alleviates the aforementioned darkness instead of just undercutting and undermining it. Take Patricia Heaton's character. As we know from her longtime role on "Everybody Loves Raymond" and her shorter stint on "Back to You," Heaton has a real knack for the skeptical, world-weary mom role. So why does she have to be so frantic and goofy here? She isn't all that believable or all... (Salon)

TV review: '30 Rock' funny even without viewers  Oct 15, 2009
There are people who adored "Arrested Development" but can't be told to watch "Modern Family" this year on ABC because they don't trust that there will be intelligent laughs or inspired writing ... In the first two episodes there are laugh-out-loud moments from Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan), Kenneth (Jack McBrayer), Jack, Liz and Will Arnett, whose recurring character of Devon Banks, the gay-centric nemesis of Jack, is nearly as wonderful as his role on "Arrested Development.". (San Francisco Chronicle)

ABC sharpens satire  Sep 22, 2009
The former is one of the funniest, most fully realized pilots to hit a network since "Arrested Development." It's a mockumentary (agreed, too much of that with "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation" already on NBC) about three disparate families. Ed O'Neill plays Jay, an older man who marries a much younger Colombian woman named Gloria (Sofia Vergara), who comes with an 11-year-old son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez), who's a little too emotional and poetic for Jay's taste. Bateman renewed after being 'Arrested'  Sep 9, 2009
" Decades after Bateman was a child star on "Little House on the Prairie," "Silver Spoons" and "The Hogan Family," it's clear that another chapter has unfolded in his career. It was spawned by "Arrested Development," the acclaimed but ratings-deprived series that ran for three seasons from 2003-2006. Since then, Bateman has chosen his roles carefully, charting a revival as an in-demand character actor with impeccable comedic timing. He's played a husband fearful of adulthood in "Juno," a super... Best new TV: "Glee"  Sep 8, 2009
Combining the breakneck comedy and sly farce of "Arrested Development" with the pop-savvy wit of "Ugly Betty" and the twisted humor, odd soundtrack and deadpan voice-overs of one of the greatest movies about high school of all time, "Election," "Glee" is bold, silly, demonic and addictive -- one full hour of very good (but not very clean) fun. 'Extract' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know  Sep 5, 2009
"I'd written it a long time ago, actually, like seven years ago or something, and when I first saw 'Arrested Development' on DVD, I just thought, 'Man, this is the guy, this guy is really good,' " he said. "He's able to be funny and likable and just be the rock that holds everything down while there's all these crazy characters around him.". (VHI.com -- Music News)

'Extract' not Judge's finest work  Sep 5, 2009
"Extract" is a real tour de force for Bateman, who finally has a big-screen role that plays to his "Arrested Development" strength - a guy dismayed at how moronic those around him can be. He plays Joel, a self-made man, a successful bottler of vanilla, almond and assorted other flavoring "extracts," a guy who knows his employees, who range from infantile and delusional all the way to incompetent. (Fresno Bee)

Help Laughtrack celebrate its first birthday  Sep 5, 2009

Justin Bateman, who played the sensible Michael on the TV show, plays a similar role in "Extract," where he tries to make sense of the nutty people around him. (Honolulu Advertiser)

Jason Bateman renewed after being `Arrested'  Sep 4, 2009
But Bateman is composed and serene just as he was in "Arrested Development" and again is in his new film, "Extract." Both plop him in the middle of a small universe of eccentric characters ... It was spawned by "Arrested Development," the acclaimed but ratings-deprived series that ran for three seasons from 2003-2006 ... Bateman speaks thoughtfully and ambitiously about his future; earning respect, he says, is the "fuel for longevity." But he knows it all started with "Arrested Development.". His luck finally changed with the 2003 debut of Arrested Development, which starred Bateman as Michael Bluth, scion of an exceedingly dysfunctional wealthy family ... Review: `Extract' tastes too bland  Sep 1, 2009
" (AP Photo/Miramax Film Corp, Sam Urdank) Now, Judge is back to the daily grind with "Extract," but this time the writer-director tells his wacky working tales from the boss' point of view: that of Jason Bateman's Joel Reynold, owner of a flavor extract factory. It's doubtful that this comedy will grab its audience in the same way, though. Judge's characters are so one-note and their misadventures so ridiculous that it's hard to get attached to them or care about how they turn out.Pretty much... (Hanford Sentinal, CA)

    Arrested Development's David Cross  Aug 31, 2009
") TIME talked with Cross about the literary scene, his upcoming stand-up tour and what to expect when Arrested Development comes to the big screen. Why'd you decide to write this book? It was simply picking up the phone and saying, "Yes," to whoever's idea it was. Somebody from the publishing company called my literary agent, which I didn't know existed at the time. Still haven't met him. Although he's welcome to 15% of whatever I earn. What was the process of writing like? Surprising? Easy?... (Time.com)

Why Should So Many Americans Feel Threatened by Business?  Jun 25, 2009
Arrested Development on Fox (2003-2006) received even more critical praise (including six Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe) for its off-kilter presentation of yet another deeply dysfunctional, criminally corrupt business family. The show combines elements of "High School Musical" with Alexander Payne's brilliant dark comedy "Election," plus a heady dose of "Rushmore," "Arrested Development," "Freaks and Geeks" and "Office Space" thrown in for good measure. TV review: 'Sit Down, Shut Up' - don't bother  Apr 16, 2009
But it's certainly unexpected that "Sit Down, Shut Up," featuring one of the best voice casts going and executive produced by Mitchell Hurwitz of "Arrested Development," would be that series ... "Arrested Development" alums Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Henry Winkler play P.E. teacher Larry Littlejunk, "pseudo-jock English teacher" Ennis Hofftard and German teacher Willard Deutschebog, respectively. Veteran voice actor will 'Shut Up'  Apr 15, 2009
The driving force behind the show, Mitchell Hurwitz, is better known for live-action television shows, such as "Arrested Development" and "The Ellen Show." TV review: 'Better Off Ted' develops laughs  Mar 19, 2009
Your first instinct upon seeing ABC's newest sitcom, "Better Off Ted," is that its creator has great taste in other sitcoms, since the series seems to be partly inspired by "30 Rock," "The Office" and "Arrested Development." But that doesn't give enough credit to that creator, Victor Fresco, who put "Andy Richter Controls the Universe" on the air before all of them ... This is a workplace comedy (like "30 Rock" and "The Office") with generous touches of absurdity ("Arrested Development") that... (San Francisco Chronicle)
